Low-relief carving is a centuries-old craft that has endless creative possibilities, and can be done with minimal tools, equipment, money, and space. It's also very relaxing and a lot of fun. Carving in low-relief allows you to depict imagery and designs on a wood surface with a minimal amount of wood removal, giving the illusion of depth. In this weekend class, you'll learn how to safely use and sharpen carving chisels and gouges, how to effectively hold your work in place, how to transfer an image to wood, and how to carve an image in low-relief. This is a great class for beginners who want to try something new, or for expert woodworkers who want to add a new touch to furniture, turnings, and other woodworks. Also great for sculptors and clay artists who want to learn the basics of relief carving to use in other media.

Acanthus is a plant that grows in the Mediterranean. The earliest use of acanthus ornament is in Greek stone carving commonly used to decorate capitals and freezes. However this style outlived the Greek civilization and enjoyed popularity all over Europe. Most European countries developed their own distinct twist that can be used to identify where it was made. In this class we will explore the Norwegian version of this sublime and ancient style. The class will begin with a series of sample carvings with individual leaves in order to build general competence with the tools techniques and line-flow before moving you on to more advanced acanthus patterns. The class will also cover basic carving safety, sharpening and tool maintenance.

It's also a great way to glue veneer to substrates. Learn how to bend wood using wood veneer and vacuum press glue-ups. On day one in this class, you'll make your own negative mold from rigid foam to shape wood around, cut and glue up a stack of wood veneers, and press them onto the mold using a vacuum press. On day two, you'll cut, trim, and sand your bent-wood creation, or make another mold. Bring your ideas, drawings, and designs, and see how you can bend wood. (Maximum size of project that can fit in Pratt's vacuum presses is 10x41'.)
