Master Artist Intensive with Kaleb Hunkele Beyond CMYK: Process Printing for Riso & Screen printing
September 19-21

Learn the world of full-color, photographic reproduction in this intensive, cross-disciplinary workshop. Students will break down the steps of process (CMYK) printing to translate photographic images into vibrant prints using both Risography and Screenprinting.

Using Spectrolite—a free, user-friendly digital tool—you will learn how to separate images into distinct color channels and export films ready for production. While we will cover the fundamentals of traditional CMYK, this course encourages experimentation. Students will deviate from standard ink colors, test unconventional color combinations, and directly compare the unique textures, strengths, and aesthetics of the Riso drum and the screenprint mesh to find combinations that best suit their artistic vision and practice.

Leave with a suite of full-color prints, a solid grasp of digital color separation, and a fresh perspective on how these two powerful print mediums intersect.

Previous screenprinting experience required.

Master Artist Ana Maria Jimenez: Exploring Alternative Casting and Forging | Oct 12-14

How can metal sheet and wire be produced without modern rolling mills or industrial casting equipment? In this three-day intensive workshop, Visiting Master Artist Ana Maria Jimenez of Taller sin Borde (“Workshop Without Borders”) presents a technical investigation of pre-Hispanic metalsmithing systems.

Participants will examine material properties, process sequences, and tool use through lecture and structured demonstrations. Topics include cold-working and annealing cycles, reduction and shaping with stone implements, fabrication of organic and earthen molds, and fundamentals of lost-wax casting. Emphasis is placed on understanding historical fabrication methods as repeatable processes that can be adapted within a contemporary studio practice.

Master Artist Yuji Hiratusuka: Mokuhanga
3-day Workshop, Oct 24-26

Japanese born artist Yuji Hiratusuka will present his approach to Moku Hanga the traditional Japanese method of woodblock printing. He will cover the history of this beautiful and ancient art form.

Learn about the variety of tools and materials needed as well as carving, and hand printing from your woodblock. You will begin by transferring your image onto two to four woodblocks using the Kento registration system, carve each block using traditional tools and methods, apply water-based pigment and rice paste to the blocks using Hanga-bake (Japanese inking brushes), and then use a baren to hand-print each color woodblock onto Washi paper.

Yuji will also focus on a few of the printing techniques particular to the Moku Hanga method including how to create bokashi (gradient colors) as well as how to sharpen Japanese cutting tools with water-based Toishi (sharpening stones).

The instructor will share a collection of original Ukiyo-e prints for viewing and discussion.
